46hr Block of Line for Kiwi Rail Bridge
Smith Crane and Construction was at its best the weekend of July 23rd/24th completing a KiwiRail Bridge replacement on the Main South Line in Hinds in just 46 hours.
Crane crew honoured for lifting Turitea turbines into place
Some 10,560 tonnes of heavy components have been lifted to create the northern section of Mercury’s Turitea Wind Farm near Palmerston North, and Smith Crane and Construction did it all without a single lost-time injury.
The company has won the New Zealand Crane Association’s project of the year award, announced at the end of July.

Smith Crane and Construction proud to win Project of the Year 2025 for Te Kaha Stadium in Christchurch. This project involved up to 15 cranes on site at a time during peak construction periods to meet the various lifting capacity requirements.
Smith Crane and Construction was proud to win the 2025 Lift of the Year award for our LTR11200 working at Hangar 4, Auckland Airport. This was a technically challenging lift that required innovative lifting solutions and increased efficiency for our Client.
Smith Cranes Wins 2024 Lift of the Year Award for the Manawa Bay Shopping Centre.
With strict Civil Aviation height restrictions of 42m, the team had to think creatively. Using our Liebherr LR1280 280T Crawler Crane, we reconfigured the boom after every lift to ensure 3T air conditioning units were installed at a 95m radius—all while adhering to the strict height limits. This was a true display of precision, innovation, and teamwork.
Brian Perry Civil & Smith Crane and Construction win People's Choice 2024 for the arch bridge lift. The incredible work on the Network Arch Bridge Lift for the Kaitoke Flume Bridge Project won the hearts of our conference delegates, who voted it as their favourite project during the conference. Using a 96-tonne tower crane, this challenging lift was not only a feat of engineering but also a testament to the skill and precision of the team involved.
Smith Cranes was proud to partner with HEB Construction and Fulton Hogan winning the 2024 NZCA Project of the year award, involving up to seven cranes on site.
